Eligibility 2018

A note on eligibility rules:

Each year the organisers will review comments and feedback from the community about the previous awards and may make changes to categories, eligibility and other elements of the award. This page lists the eligibility criteria for the current award year (2018).

General eligibility:

To be eligible for nominations all works must:

  1. Fall into the science fiction, speculative fiction, or fantasy genres.
  2. Be original works of fiction which were either:
    •  first published in English in 2017;
    • OR self-published prior to 2017, and published by a professional publishing house for the first time in 2017;
    • OR published outside the USA prior to 2017 and published by a US-based publishing house for the first time in 2017.
    • Other types of reprints or special editions are not eligible.
  3. If part of a series, be the first, second or third work published in the series (publishing order). No further works in a series will be considered.

Category eligibility:

Most books will only be eligible in one category but it may not always be clear which one this should be. In cases where the same work is nominated by different people across multiple categories (e.g one person nominates books in Fantasy and another in YA) the judges and administrators will decide the final category. Every effort will be made to contact voters about this decision to enable them to change their nomination. Titles that have been subject to such decisions will be publicised on the award social media and website so keep an eye out. The only exception to this rule is Best Debut where it is legitimate for a book to be eligible in both Debut and another category.

Duplication of authors in final shortlist:

You may nominate two works by the same author in the same category but please note that in the final shortlist for a category only the work with the highest number of nominations by any single author will be included. This rule still applies in cases of books with more than one author regardless of the second author not having another listing. E.g. in the case below Dark Spells and The Enchanted Thing would both be excluded and Other Land by Author C would be included.

Author Title Nominations Shortlisted
Author A The Book of Stuff 560 Yes
Author B Wizards and Magic 545 Yes
Author A Dark Spells 525 No
Author A & Author D The Enchanted Thing 519 No
Author C Other Land 516 Yes
